Home of the GoGain App

Also wrote some words about this update:

Finally got the new Control app update out this week. I now have user accounts and Android users can even sync their courses to our cloud service. What a huge undertaking this has been. But still this is only the half way. Next: users will be able to follow other users and post their courses for everybody to see & compare. Hoping to get beta out in 1 month

A little spring this evening at Mt Misery. Better than the name suggested.

GoGain: Orienteering for the 21st Century

Kartan ver hur jag sprang i lrdags p , r ganska njd.

Inte van vid "Stockholmsorientering" dr den strsta svrigheten r att hitta kontrollpunkten men dr vgvalen r relativt ltta.

what is it with websites and only giving locations in proprietary systems. of all people I'd expect orienteers to be giving good locations

I don't want your post code I can only use in closed programs that have paid Royal Mail too much money, nor your what3words I have to sign up with some company to have them decode. Both require an internet connection.

OS Grid references are good, though I'm unaware of map programs that can use them.

why why not just give a lat & long (you can even geo: URI it but I don't expect people to know that)

and then they throw some Google Maps short URL at you like they aren't people who obsess over good maps! useless!

Ngon som ska springa i helgen

Everyone really enjoyed the course I planned!

I'm really glad as I felt it'd been stunted by the necessary alterations due to changes & flooding in the forest, and the last-minute cut of two controls by one of the club organisers.

Genuine praise & thanks from many friendly old people I didn't know, naturally one snuck a "we need more young planners like you" in there

This has required a lot of work. Still not 100% done. Will continue testing and hoping to finish this week...

This will land first on Android. iOS users have had the iCloud syncing already many years but this will enable us to sync courses across Android-Apple devices. First we'll enable it only for Android though. Also subscription sharing will become A LOT easier: You just sign in with your account on all your shared devices.

I am prepping up the next release of Control for Android. Maybe next week... Will be huge. And the next step towards the even more huge feature of 2024. First, we'll introduce Control user account. Then we'll introduce the ability to sync your courses across the devices.

You cannot imagine how elated I am that course setting software now does not only run on my desktop using the current version but even on the laptop where the same procedure never worked, now using .

The fonts are still an issue, but that will sort itself out in time.

That was the last reason to keep on one laptop!!!

Tre veckor till i Nynshamn, knner mig inte riktigt mentalt redo

adjacent sports
- (running with a really heavy backpack)
- (running and picking up trash, or where I live, there is so much you're might as well walk the 3 feet between trash items)
- (running while lost in the forest)
- ... go ask the Finns
- ... running + hurdles + puddles
- (running from bar to bar)
- (Running up the stairs in a really tall building)
- (Running with trip hazards)

When the course cuts across the pitch. Wait, what country am I in again

Easter Saturday, which means, among other things, day 2 of international races. Very tough physically despite being middle distance discipline, steep and very sinky soggy.

There is development happening

question for peeps:

I keep seeing explainer vids that say you should look up magnetic declination for a map online and then adjust the compass, but it seems like you could just align the map and compass meridians, then adjust the box to match magnetic north.

am I wrong is that bad practice

Step 1) Revisit s novel Thud

Step 2) Go on an unseasonably warm day in a New England forest full of boulders

Step 3) Wonder why you keep thinking about Koom Valley

Fittingly, I was attacked by neither trolls nor dwarves, only the landscape.

I'm trying to make a reader (a static feed aggregator site on GitHub) with feeds from news around the web -- So far it seems to work! Thanks

I love

How to improve your sense of direction - BBC Future

I want to say thanks to the person from Germany who got some of my designs: I hope you enjoy them!

Drizzly but not too cold for some winter in New England.

9-10: dead reckon or follow the trails (I chose the former and that rocky slope was a little more exciting than I expected. Would the trail north have been better Who knows)

To be clear: picture is not from the 10th leg!

Maybe it is time to reveal that there will be something BIG for Control app this year. Probably summer. So big that I will bump the version numbers to 4.0 on iOS and 2.0 on Android. But not going to tell you just yet what. Also there will be a first proper public beta since the app launched back in the day. Stay tuned...

Cautionary Tales of

Episode 4 8 16 Well, anyway

The scale on the map is important. Unless you *like* running right by an interesting feature without realizing its your next control. And then spending 10 minutes wondering what the hell is going on.

First time Ive tried truly winter . Slow but fun* and wonderfully peaceful.

Did not encounter any friendly talking beavers or Jesus-lions. But other than that, five stars, would recommend.

* Well, ok, it was more fun when I paid attention to the scale of the map. But that was just me being stupid, nothing to do with winter.

A great story on orienteering and spatial memory and its connection to success in STEM disciplines:

More pics from Beacon Hill today. The thick mist was fantastic challenge in the early morning, but it lifted to sunshine.

Favourite control site hung ready for league race tomorrow morning. It's not even hidden by brambles. Enjoy ) (Several more to do before sunrise).

The route comparison feature in starts to take form. Select any control-control interval and swipe left/right to compare. There are some small issues still but I think this is close to a release!

The kind of objects I take home from the when I go off the tracks. Reminder that is an environmental and responsible sport, and we won't save nature by alienating people from it and putting unnecessary restrictions on access. Time spent on meaningful activities in one's surroundings is time lost to overconsumption.

50 years ago today I took part in my first event in a horrible bramble jungle in Somerset. The event was put on by Millfield School and IIRC they timed us with Smiths lab clocks. Tonight I did one of night Maprun courses at Prestonfield. Fell over and probably ended up as muddy as I did in 1974. No blood lost this time though. I feel sooooo old.

Lovely course racing the Robin Hood trophy today at Sherwood, reminded me of my first time here as an M19 in the mid 90s, when I ran bunch further, but in less time. My knees are going to give it what-for all week now.
